Pi Kappa Phi
At a Glance: Different from Day One
The Ability Experience began in 1976 with a bold idea and a shared vision. Durward W. Owen, Xi (Roanoke), then executive director of Pi Kappa Phi, set out to harness the energy and potential of undergraduate members to create lasting, positive change in their communities. He partnered with artist and designer Thomas Sayre, who had developed a therapeutic play unit for children with disabilities.
What started as a single project soon became something far greater. Their collaboration sparked a movement that would grow into one of the most successful philanthropic initiatives in the Greek world.
Since then, The Ability Experience has evolved into a national nonprofit that offers innovative programs for Pi Kappa Phi undergraduate and alumni members. From building accessible amenities to engaging in immersive service experiences, our programs are designed to deepen understanding of the disability community and empower members to become true servant leaders.
