Grant Applications

The Ability Experience will fund grants to meet our mission and that impact the lives of people with disabilities where members of Pi Kappa Phi are involved in a meaningful way. We award our grants to organizations that are at the forefront of service to people with disabilities. These organizations are selected by The Ability Experience Grants Committee and Board of Directors. All grant allocations will be decided by the grants committee and approved by the board of director’s.

Grants, Definitions and Eligibility

Ability Camp Grant 

Awarded to a camp that serves people with disabilities and sponsors an Ability Camp for members of Pi Kappa Phi. The grant is given to fund materials for accessible amenities for the Pi Kappa Phi members to construct during the event.

Application

Eligibility Criteria: Must be a camp that serves people with disabilities, willing to sponsor at least 35 participants for lodging and meals, must provide contractor/certified maintenance director to lead team.

Ability Weekend Grant 

Awarded to a camp or organization that serves people with disabilities and sponsors an Ability Weekend for members of Pi Kappa Phi. The grant is given to fund materials for accessible amenities for the Pi Kappa Phi members to construct during the event. 

Application 

Eligibility Criteria: Must be a camp or organization that serves people with disabilities, willing to sponsor at least 35 participants for lodging and meals, must provide contractor/certified maintenance director to lead team.

AccessABILITY Grant   

Awarded to a Pi Kappa Phi chapter to use for a project based in their school’s community. This grant is designed to incorporate a Pi Kappa Phi chapter’s alumni as an engagement and service event. The Pi Kappa Phi chapter will select an individual, family or organization in need of an accessible ramp.

Eligibility: Pi Kappa Phi Chapters and Alumni can only apply to sponsor a project in their community. Must serve family/person with disability. Must have alumni participation to be considered.

Build America Grant  

Awarded to a selected camp that serves people with disabilities and sponsors the Build America team. The grant is used to fund materials for approved accessible amenities for the Build America team to construct during their stay at the camp. 

Application  

Eligibility Criteria: Must be a camp that serves people with disabilities, willing to sponsor team for lodging and meals, must provide contractor/certified maintenance director to lead team. Have sponsored an Ability Camp or Weekend prior.

Circle of Giving Grant  

Awarded to an organization that has an active partnership with a Pi Kappa Phi chapter. The Pi Kappa Phi chapter becomes eligible for the grant when they have achieved chapter fundraising over $5,000. If a Pi Kappa Phi chapter is awarded the grant, they will be given a grant up to 25% of their fundraising.

Eligibility Criteria: Chapters that raise over $5,000

Journey of Hope Grant

Awarded to a selected organization that serves people with disabilities. For an organization to be eligible, they must sponsor the Journey of Hope team for a Friendship Visit* with their clients during the event.  

Application  

Eligibility Criteria: Must have Friendship Visit with team and be an organization that serves people with disabilities. Only eligible to receive once every three years.

Gear Up Florida Grant  

Awarded to a selected organization that serves people with disabilities. For an organization to be eligible, they must sponsor the Gear Up Florida team for a Friendship Visit* with their clients during the event. 

Application  

Eligibility Criteria: Must have Friendship Visit with team and be an organization that serves people with disabilities. Only eligible to receive once every three years.

 

Todd Porterfield/Jason Tirado/ Sally and Bruce Rogers Family Memorial Grants

Awarded to organizations that are selected by the Journey of Hope team. The selection is based on a team vote that occurs at the end of the trip.  

Eligibility: Every organization that sponsors the Journey of Hope team is eligible.  

*Friendship Visit A Friendship Visit is defined as an interaction between Pi Kappa Phi team members and an organizations clients. These Friendship Visits are planned ahead of time with The Ability Experience staff prior to any event.

Examples of Grants in Action

Circle of Giving – wheelchair ramps, scholarship for client, playground units, and adaptive equipment
Build America/Ability Weekend/Ability Camp/AccessABILITY – wheelchair ramps, accessible docks, accessible horse stables, accessible pavilions, etc.
Journey of Hope/Gear Up Florida/Memorial Grants – computer lab, scholarship for client, etc.

The Ability Experience will not fund:

  • Private charities or foundations
  • Cash payments to individuals 
  • Capital campaigns
  • Political causes or organizations whose primary purpose is to influence legislation
  • Organization that only raise funds for other organizations
  • Meals and events for Journey of Hope or Gear Up Florida teams

Eligibility

Grantees who are considered organizations must be able to meet the following criteria:

  • Must be considered tax exempt by the IRS for all cash grants
  • Provide the most recent audited or certified, board approved financials
  • A list of Board of Directors
  • Cash grants for individuals must have a sponsoring organization or company
  • Program summary with intended outcomes
  • Follow up with a report of actual outcomes within 60 days
  • All organizations will be checked against the Office of Foreign Asset Control Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List
  • W9 form on file with The Ability Experience

Organizations will be notified via email the day the grant is open. Organizations will be notified if selected or not in a timely manner.
